A charter belonging to Barking Abbey, dating from 687 AD, gives the first mention of the village of Dagenham. Today only the ruins remain of the Abbey, but until the 20th century, Dagenham village had remained unchanged. Archaeological excavations of the Abbey have uncovered jewellery, carved bone, pottery, gold thread and glass making equipment.
