Balham, once a hamlet on a Roman road, has been settled since Saxon times. In the early 19th Century the town grew around Balham Hill. Its chapel, which opened in 1808, later became the parish church of St. Mary's. Balham has always been a thriving shopping centre; Sainsbury's opened there in 1888. In 1907 the Balham Empire opened as a Pathé film theatre.
